[0] NORTHRIDGE KNOCKS OFF UCSB\CSUN 3, UCSB 1.

Byline: Kevin Acee Special to the Daily News

The players on the Cal State Northridge men's volleyball team felt lighter, freer and even better after beating visiting UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  on Tuesday.

"I can't (express) how much of a load that is off our backs off our backs (sometimes referred to by its initials, oob) is a radical feminist periodical published in Washington, D.C.. It has been published continuously since it was founded in February 1970, making it the longest-running feminist periodical currently ," outside hitter Collin Smith said after the sixth-ranked Matadors beat the third-ranked Gauchos 16-14, 15-11, 16-17, 15-13 in front of a raucous - as usual - crowd of 306 at Northridge's gym.

"I was starting to wonder if could get to that next level," said outside hitter Chris Gil, who played the role of super sub Tuesday with 13 kills. "Being able to finish games is part of that level."

To get their first victory over a top-four team in four tries this season, the Matadors came back from significant deficits to win the first two games, came back but lost the third game, then won a fourth game they had seemingly lost control of - twice.

What a difference.

In its two most recent losses, to No. 1 Hawaii and then-No. 2 UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

, Northridge (5-4, 4-2) showed pluck pluck

All season, as opponents closed in on 15 points, too many times the Matadors became a team in need of the Heimlich maneuver Heimlich maneuver, emergency procedure used to treat choking victims whose airway is obstructed by food or another substance. It forces air from the lungs through the windpipe, pushing the obstruction out. . They looked eerily like last year's underachieving squad.

Coach John Price and his players said before the season that this year would different. Finally, maybe, at least for now, they are.

"I feel like we turned the corner," Price said. " . . . I thought (our) poise was awesome, which is something we've been lacking."

Time and again Tuesday, the Matadors made the spectacular plays opponents had been making all season, and they gave the students who faithfully come to their matches a reason to be rowdy the entire night.

"We've got such good fans," Smith said. "We wanted to finally do good for them."

Down 14-11 in the first game, Northridge came back to take a 15-14 lead behind the serving of Strickland. Then, after losing the serve, getting it back and losing it again, the Matadors finished the nearly one-hour game when setter setter: see sporting dog.

Dan Nash slammed down a set from Hughes, an outside hitter.

In the second game, Santa Barbara (4-2, 4-1) led 8-3 and 10-7. But, again on Strickland's serve, the Matadors came back to take an 11-10 lead. The final point came on a Smith kill off a set from, again, Hughes.

Northridge erased deficits of 9-6, 12-10 and 15-14 before succumbing 17-16 in the third game.

Northridge led 10-5 in the fourth game before Santa Barbara scored six unanswered points to take an 11-10 lead. The Matadors went ahead 14-11, but it took a while for them to finally end the two-hour, 55-minute match.
