[0] MITCHELL BREAKS LEG, IS OUT FOR THE SEASON.

Byline: Jon Wilner Daily News Staff Writer

Freddie Lee Mitchell (born November 28, 1978 in Lakeland, Florida) is a former American football wide receiver in the NFL who most recently played for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a 1st round draft pick in the 2001 NFL Draft out of UCLA.
knew the gruesome truth quicker than anyone else. And why not? It was his thigh that collapsed.

``I BROKE MY LEG,'' Mitchell yelled after landing awkwardly on his left leg at the end of a 47-yard kickoff return in the first quarter.

Twenty minutes later, Mitchell was carted off Robertson Field For the airport in North Dakota, see .

``But there's an excellent chance he'll be able to perform quite nicely next season.''

Finerman expects Mitchell's recovery to take 4-5 months but declined to give an exact return date.

``If it's in a lot of pieces, it's more difficult to put together and the longer it takes to heal,'' Finerman said. ``My information is it's relatively clean. . . . There's a very good chance he'll recover and be as good as he was.''

The scene was eerily reminiscent of former linebacker Anselmo Zamano's injury two years ago at Michigan. While Mitchell's doesn't appear as severe - Zamano almost lost his leg and might never play again - it will have a greater impact on UCLA's fortunes.

Mitchell was UCLA's best big-play threat and its top punt and kickoff returner In American and Canadian football, a kick returner (KR) is the player on special teams who is primarily responsible to catch kickoffs and attempts to return them in the opposite direction. . In his college debut last week against Texas, he gained 233 total yards and threw a 34-yard touchdown pass.

if they have Freddie's big-play dimension,'' offensive coordinator Al Borges said. ``Freddie gave us more confidence that we could strike any minute, and that's a nice feeling.''

Mitchell's injury leaves UCLA with only three proven receivers: Danny Farmer, Brad Melsby and Brian Poli-Dixon. That means Jon Dubravac, a true freshman, and Hart High's Cody Joyce, a redshirt freshman, must increase production.

Borges and Toledo will decide this week if strategic or personnel changes are needed.
