City Councilman Nate Holden Nathaniel "Nate" R. Holden (1929-) served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1987 to 2002. He previously served a term on the California State Senate and was Assistant Chief Deputy to then Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn. appeared headed for a June runoff election and a battle was shaping up in the crowded field to succeed Eastside Councilman Richard Alatorre Richard Alatorre is a politician, and a member of the Democratic Party. Alatorre has served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council. He was the first Latino to serve on the council in 23 years. , election returns showed Tuesday. Five incumbent council members - including Hal Bernson Hal Bernson served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 12th district. He was chair of the Transportation Committee. Prior to being on the City Council, he served in the Navy. Preceded by Robert M. , Joel Wachs Joel Wachs served for several terms as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 2nd district. He was first elected by defeating incumbent James B. Potter. While in office, Wachs chaired the Public Works Committee and vice-chair of the Environmental Quality & Waste Management and John Ferraro, who represent San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. neighborhoods - appeared headed toward easy re-election. Early returns among the 13 candidates vying to succeed Alatorre showed Deputy District Attorney Nick Pacheco - endorsed by Mayor Richard Riordan - locked in a close race for a possible runoff with activist Victor Griego and County Commissioner Alvin Parra - who had challenged Alatorre four years ago. The 14th District stretches from Eagle Rock to Boyle Heights. The race to succeed Alatorre has drawn wide attention because it is considered the heart and home of Latino politics in Los Angeles and has served to divide elected Latino officials among the different candidates. Holden had insisted he would win election outright, but found himself in a tight battle with economic development Scott Suh, who had campaigned heavily in the Korean-American community. In his campaign, Holden concentrated his effort against minister Madison Shockley, who was running a strong third. Elsewhere it appeared incumbents were headed toward victory. Wachs was leading in the 2nd Council District against business owner Kathy P. Anthony, retired city worker John Bunte and marketing-youth director John Spishak. Ferraro was leading in the 4th Council District over construction supervisor Benjamin Lucas.
