[0] HOMETOWN HEROES : ATHLETES OF THE WEEK.

Boys: Donte Morgan, Taft.

What he did: The senior outside linebacker had three quarterback sacks, 10 tackles, recovered a fumble and forced another fumble in Taft's 30-6 season-opening football victory over Sylmar.

The scoop:Morgan was a cornerback last season, but coach Troy Starr moved him to linebacker to take advantage of his 4.6 40-yard speed.

Comment: ``He had a great game,'' Starr said. ``He's a focused kid right now. He's matured a lot.''

Girls:Andrea Neipp, Highland.

What she did: Neipp won the senior division of the Seaside Invitational cross country meet in Ventura. Her time, 17:27, was 20 seconds better than runner-up Breann Schweitzer of Saugus.

The scoop: It was a decidedly upbeat moment for Neipp, who was disappointed and embarrassed when her junior track season ended prematurely in academic ineligibility in May. An ambitious student, Neipp overloaded her plate last spring, getting up at 4:30 a.m. to attend seminary classes with her church, taking advanced courses in high school and pushing herself to make the state finals in the 3,200 meters. And her grades suffered for it.

Comment: ``It wasn't like I said, `Oh, I don't feel like doing my homework,' '' explained Neipp, who said she had a 3.33 grade-point average before her slip. ``I just spread myself too thin. I definitely learned a lesson from it. I learned the hard way, but I learned.''
