[0] FISET GIVES KINGS A TIE IN RETURN : KINGS 1, EDMONTON 1.

Byline: Roger Phillips

It was a night to commemorate Luc Robitaille's 500th goal, but also a night for a different hero. This time, Stephane Fiset Stephane Fiset (born June 17, 1970 in Montreal, Quebec) is an ice hockey goaltender who is retired. Playing career

was the key to the Kings' success, or at least to their absence of failure.

Back in goal for the first time in nearly a month after recovering from his latest groin strain, Fiset made 32 saves and for much of the night kept the Kings in the game in what ended a 1-1 tie with the Edmonton Oilers The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The strangest moment of the night came in the third period, when 5-foot-8 Kings winger Donald Audette fought 6-2 Oilers wing Bill Guerin to a draw. Both received fighting majors, and Audette departed for the night with a game misconduct.

The Kings (15-21-4) extended their unbeaten streak to six, and are 7-1-1 in their last nine games. They are 2-0-1 against the Oilers (16-18-5).

The Kings took an early lead on Blake's third goal this season, 20 fewer than he scored a year ago when he led NHL NHL Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, see there  defensemen in goal scoring and won the Norris Trophy.

Blake - who missed 15 games with a broken foot and another three when suspended for a slashing incident - scored on an early power play, beating Essensa with a 35-foot one-timer from the slot off a pass from Audette.

But though the Kings held the lead, they weren't able to control the flow of play. And 6:22 into the second period, the Oilers got the opportunity they needed to even the score when Kings center Jozef Stumpel received a double-minor penalty for high-sticking Mike Grier.

Less than one minute later, the Kings left Smyth alone in front of their net, and Guerin passed him the puck. Fiset sprawled to make the initial save, but Smyth tucked the rebound into a wide-open net.

The Kings escaped the second period without allowing another goal, even surviving a couple of shifts in which they tried and failed several times to clear the puck out of their zone. Each time, the Oilers would regain possession and apply pressure, but they couldn't get the puck past Fiset.

In the final moments of the second period, with the Kings shorthanded, they got a rare scoring chance of their own, but a 20-foot shot from the slot by Vladimir Tsyplakov deflected harmlessly off the crossbar. The Oilers then created a similar chance of their own, but Fiset smothered smoth·er

In the third period, the Oilers continued to have the better of play, but Fiset continued to keep the Kings in the game, never more so than when he stopped a point-blank chance by George Laraque less than five minutes into the period.
