The geophysics center at the University of Washington reported the preliminary magnitude of the earthquake was 4.8. There were no immediate reports of major damage.

There were reports that the quake was felt as far away as 250 miles from Seattle. The Indians and the Mariners left the field after the 30 seconds of shaking at 9:04 p.m.

Eight minutes later, it was announced that the game had been suspended until 5:35 p.m. today.

``In my mind there was no doubt. I really didn't feel we should play because I don't think baseball is as important as as many lives as we had in here,'' home plate umpire Jim McKean James Gilbert McKean (born May 26 1945 in Montreal, Quebec) is a former umpire in Major League Baseball who worked in the American League from 1974 to 1999, and in both major leagues in 2000. The Kingdome press box began swaying back and forth with the Indians in the field and Cleveland leading 6-3.
