[0] DICKSON GETS ALL-STAR INVITATION.

Byline: Marc J. Spears Daily News Staff Writer

Jason Dickson
Jason Dickson (born March 30, 1973 in London, Ontario) is a Canadian baseball pitcher.'

Dickson is a graduate of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M University. He plays for the Somerset Patriots and was drafted by the California Angels in the 6th round of the 1994 MLB Amateur
definitely had no time to celebrate Wednesday.

The rookie Angels pitcher was named as the club's lone representative for Tuesday's All-Star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games  at Cleveland's Jacobs Field Coordinates:

. But he had to focus on pitching against the visiting Dodgers and not his achievement.

Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza Michael Joseph Piazza (born September 4, 1968 in Norristown, Pennsylvania) is an American Major League Baseball player who currently plays for the Oakland Athletics. He began his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and played for the Florida Marlins, New York Mets, San Diego Padres  was named as a National League starter on Monday and none of his teammates were selected as reserves. With just Dickson and Piazza making the Ohio trek, the teams will send a combined two players to the midseason classic for the first time since 1994.

``I feel pretty surprised,'' said Dickson, 24, before the game. ``I haven't thought about it yet, it hasn't sunken in. Starting (against the Dodgers) is my main concern. (Today) it will begin to sink in.''

Dickson became the first Angels rookie to be selected to the All-Star game since Wally Joyner

in 1986. The right-hander also became the first Angels rookie pitcher to be selected since Mark Clear in 1979.

The London, Ontario, native entered Wednesday's game with an 8-4 record, two complete games, one shutout and a 3.51 ERA. Boston shortstop Nomar Garciaparra Anthony Nomar Garciaparra[1] (born July 23, 1973, in Whittier, California) is a Mexican-American baseball player who currently plays third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  was the only other rookie of either league selected.

``We're real happy for him,'' said Angels manager Terry Collins. ``It's a great honor.''

Of the Angels shunned, usual center fielder Jim Edmonds James Patrick "Jim" Edmonds (born June 27, 1970 in Fullerton, California) is a left-handed batter who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals. Edmonds is affectionately known as Jimmy Baseball [1], "Lassie" and as "Hollywood"[2] among Cardinals fans.  was the most notable. The one-time All-Star (1995) has already been receiving Gold Glove attention and entered Wednesday's game with a .307 batting average and 14 homers.

Probably the most impressive information about Edmonds is his fight to keep playing despite torn cartilage in his left knee. He also plays in one of baseball's best outfields, where usual left fielder Garret Anderson (.317, 98 hits) and right fielder Tim Salmon (.290, 12 homers) were also passed over.

``I can say that I'm a little disappointed,'' Edmonds said.

On Sunday, Dodgers manager Bill Russell said right fielder Raul Mondesi deserved serious consideration. Mondesi, whose only All-Star appearance was in 1995, entered Wednesday's action with a .290 average, 17 homers and 48 RBI RBI

      .

``There are guys like Mondesi on every club,'' Russell said, ``Guys who deserve to make it and don't. (Making the selections) is a tough job and you can't take everybody.''

Dodger center fielder Brett Butler was also a possible sentimental pick since he is expected to retire after this season. If selected, however, the 40-year-old, who has injuries to both his shoulders and his neck, would probably have been working on his tan instead.
