 marchers get quick permission

With little debate, the Los Angeles Police Commission on Friday approved a dozen parade permits for groups planning to demonstrate during the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

The quick approvals followed a federal judge's ruling last month that the city's application process for parade permits was unconstitutional. Last week, protesters and city officials reached an agreement that makes the process more flexible.

Traffic light reset system requested

The massive traffic jam caused Wednesday when a power outage knocked out some 300 traffic signals in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
prompted officials on Friday to call for developing a new system to reset signals.

Councilwoman Laura Chick called for the city Department of Transportation to report on the costs involved to install an automatic reset system in the signals to avoid having city workers manually reset each one.

She said the city should look at having a central location where the signals can be reset after such outages. Part of the problem Wednesday, she said, is that workers were unable to get to the signals because of traffic tie-ups.

Council approves mayor's choices

After weeks of debate in a power struggle with Mayor Richard Riordan, the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  on Friday approved the appointment of three commissioners with little comment.

Recognizing they were faced with a deadline to either reject the nominations or see them go into effect without action, the council voted 14-0 to approve the appointments of James Mulkeen to the Board of Civil Service Commissioners, along with Warren Steinberg and Ivan Houston to the Human Relations Commission.

The council has been at odds with Riordan ever since his decision to remove one-time ally Ted Stein from the Harbor Commission in what Stein said was an attack because of his support of City Attorney James Hahn for mayor next year.

As a result, the council has been exploring procedures to follow in the confirmation of commissioners since the new City Charter removed the council's authority to overturn a mayor's removal of commission members.
