      What: Bay Area Works presents a "Workforce Development Strategy
    Session" to celebrate welfare-to-work success stories and
    encourage more Bay Area employers to participate. Media are
    invited to attend. Mayor Willie Brown will offer opening remarks.

      Earvin "Magic" Johnson will discuss the importance of hiring
    former welfare recipients and urge more Bay Area businesses to do
    the same.

      13 Bay Area businesses, including Macy's West, Bank of America,
    Wal-Mart, UPS, Safeway, Monster Cable, Orchid Services, Tech Prose
    and United Airlines, dubbed the "Bay Area All Stars" will be
    honored for their efforts in hiring, training and retaining former
    welfare recipients.

      United Way of the Bay Area and Bay Area Works will announce a
    regional 800 number (800-273-6222) that will help link people
    moving off of welfare with potential jobs and employers with
    prospective employees.

      The Summit is organized by Bay Area Works and sponsored by United
    Way of the Bay Area, Bank of America and the William and Flora
    Hewlett Foundation.
