During Friday Muslim prayers in the territories and several Arab countries, mosque imams strongly denounce Israel and some of them call for a jihad (holy war) against the Jewish state. Hours after prayers end, Israeli police storm the contested Muslim holy shrine of Haram Al Sharif in Jerusalem. Palestinians had at first stoned Israeli security forces, who had been under strict orders from PM Barak not to enter the complex. Protest demonstrations erupt in several Arab capitals. More than 90 people, overwhelmingly Palestinians and Israeli Arabs, have been killed as a result of violence in the Palestinian territories since Sept. 28. It was the worst wave of violence since September 1996. Muslim militants had called for a "day of rage" to protest against Israel's excessive use of force. Palestinians had throughout the day left and re-entered the complex, the site of the Al Aqsa and Dome of the Rock mosques which are among Islam's host sensitive and important religious shrines, from where the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have ascended into heaven. The violence followed a day of fighting as Israel imposed a four-day closure of the West Bank and Gaza Strip ahead of Yom Kippur, the Jews' holiest day, which begins in the evening on Oct. 8. In Jordan, riot police clashed with protestors for a second day on Oct. 6 after thousands marched on the Israeli embassy following Muslim prayers.
