/C L A R I F I C A T I O N -- NETWORK SYSTEMS UNVEILS NEW PRODUCTS WITH REDUNDANCY/

 The following is being issued for clarification purposes to MN004, that moved earlier today.
 MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Systems(R) Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: NSCO) announced today a new product architecture for both its channel networking and internetworking products. Called DXE, for Data Exchange Extended, it expands upon the DX architecture introduced in 1988.
 The single DXE chassis can be configured in three basic ways: as a 6-card unit with a 400-megabit backplane; as a 12-card unit with an 800- megabit backplane; and as a dual 6-card, with two independent units each with a 400-megabit backplane in the same chassis. Redundant power supplies are standard with the 12-card models and optional with the 6-card models. In the dual-6 configuration, two independent units are interconnected with inexpensive media, providing a fully fault-tolerant network device.
 Other features include advanced packaging techniques and uniquely modular subassemblies for easier manufacture and service in the field. It also offers true 19-inch rack mounting and -48vdc operation for telco applications. The new DXE chassis is totally compatible with existing DX models, providing protection of customers' investments.
 "DXE is our new platform for channel networking and internetworking," said Warren Pillsbury, vice president of marketing for Network Systems. "As organizations move to integrate their host-based and LAN-based applications, Network Systems is providing a common architecture for channel extension, CPU networking and internetworking. And as more mission-critical applications become distributed, we are providing products with greater manufacturability, serviceability and reliability."
 The company also announced Central Express, a multiple bridge/router package that functions as a collapsed backbone with scalability, redundancy, hot-swap units and fault-tolerance. Since each component routing unit is independent, it can be removed and replaced without bringing down the entire system, thereby providing hot-swap, non-stop networking. The component routing units can have a variety of media interfaces, including Token Ring, Ethernet and T1.
 DXE-based products will be available in limited quantities in March, with volume production in April; Central Express models are available now.
