LOW-COST NITROGEN OXIDE (NOx) REDUCTION METHOD
SUCCESSFULLY DEMONSTRATED AT PUBLIC SERVICE ELECTRIC AND GAS
NAPERVILLE, Ill., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Nalco Fuel Tech announced today that, in conjunction with the Electric Power Research Institute, it had completed a three-month demonstration program of its NOxOUT Process on a 321-megawatt coal-fired unit at Public Service Electric and Gas Company's Mercer Generating Station near Trenton, N.J., operating under commercial conditions.
The utility is considering installing the NOxOUT Process as part of its NOx averaging strategy under the Clean Air Act's 1990 amendments.
The projected annualized NOx reduction costs for a 40-percent NOx reduction are estimated between $625 and $750 per ton of NOx removed, with capital costs of approximately $10 per kilowatt.
Using the NOxOUT Process, the program at Public Service Electric and Gas demonstrated that NOx reductions under all fuel and load conditions were repeatable and averaged 35 percent to 40 percent from a base line of 1.8 pounds per million BTU on coal and 0.8 pounds per million BTU on natural gas, while ammonia slip remained under five parts per million. Reductions of NOx in excess of 55 percent were achieved with ammonia slip of less than 10 parts per million.
Nalco Fuel Tech, a joint venture between Fuel-Tech N.V. (NASDAQ: FTEKF) and Nalco Chemical Company (NYSE: NLC), is a leader in air pollution control technologies and provides products, services and chemicals built around the NOxOUT technology. The NOxOUT technology is now installed or under contract on more than 100 combustion units worldwide.
