in Turkey has been elected to lead a regional union of the chambers of
commerce.
Chairman of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, Murat Yalcintas, was named as the president of the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME) in a vote on Friday in Beirut, Lebanon, to assume the top position in the organization for the second time in a row. Yalcintas last led the association for a two-year term after being elected as the president in Istanbul in 2007. ASCAME was founded on 1 October 1982, as an initiative of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with its counterparts from different Mediterranean countries. The association is one of the most representative and geographically widespread international organisations, with a membership of more than 200 Chambers of Commerce and other associated bodies from 22 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea Mediterranean Sea [Lat.,=in the midst of lands], the world's largest inland sea, c.965,000 sq mi (2,499,350 sq km), surrounded by Europe, Asia, and Africa.
