(GEN) EROGLU ON WITHDRAWAL OF BANK SUPPORT FOR ILISU DAM.

ANKARA, Jul 8, 2009 (TUR tur: see ibex. ) -- Turkish Environment & Forestry Minister Veysel Eroglu said on Wednesday that his ministry did not need any support to build Ilisu Dam dam, barrier, commonly across a watercourse, to hold back water, often forming a reservoir or lake; dams are also sometimes used to control or contain rockslides, mudflows, and the like in regions where these are common. .

"Hasankeyf will be a center of attraction thanks to this project. Ilisu will be built under any condition," Eroglu said in an exclusive interview with the AA correspondent.

Eroglu said Ilisu Project would upgrade the life standards of the people in the region and provide job opportunities for them.

"Those who oppose the project claim that Hasankeyf would be inundated in·un·date

Eroglu said termination of the loan agreement was a political decision, did not have any technical basis.

Hasankeyf, located on the River Dicle (Tigris) in the southeastern city of Batman, is an ancient city dating back 10,000 years that was declared a natural conservation area in 1981. However, the district as well as its historical and cultural wealth are in danger of being inundated by Ilsu Dam. About 90 percent of the area will be submerged when the dam is built.

When the construction of the dam is completed, it will be the second biggest dam of Turkey as far as the capacity of its lake. Also Ilisu Hydroelectric Plant will be Turkey's fourth biggest one after Ataturk, Keban and Karakaya.
