(ECO) PROTON ACCELERATOR FACILITY TO BE ESTABLISHED IN TURKEY.

ANKARA, Aug 24, 2009 (TUR) -- A proton accelerator facility will be established in Turkey to carry out scientific researchs similar with those carried out at the European Organization for Nuclear research European Organization for Nuclear Research: see CERN.  (CERN CERN or European Organization for Nuclear Research, nuclear and particle physics research center straddling the French-Swiss border W of Geneva, Switzerland. ) in Switzerland.

The Housing Development Administration of Turkey (TOKI TOKI Toplu Konut Idaresi (Turkish: Housing Development Administration of Turkey) ) will lead the process for construction of the facility. It will begin receiving proposals for the construction on September 18.

The facility to be built at the Nuclear Research and Training Center of the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency (TAEK TAEK Turkiye Atom Enerjisi Kurumu (Turkish Atomic Energy Commission) ) in the Turkish capital city of Ankara, is expected to become functional within two years.

In the facility, radioisotopes used in diagnosis of many diseases including cancer will be produced. The facility will also produce radiopharmaceutical isotopes used as therapeutic substance. Turkey has imported radioisotopes and radiopharmaceutical isotopes from different countries so far.

TAEK aims at making exports from the facility in the long term.

Also, scientific researchs similar to those carried out at the CERN will be carried out in the facility.

Devices to be installed in the facility's laboratories cost about 11.6 million euro. They will be delivered to Turkey beginning from 2010.
