(DIP) TURKIC-SPEAKING COUNTRIES ESTABLISH COOPERATION COUNCIL.


NAKHICHEVAN, Oct 4, 2009 (TUR) -- Turkic-speaking countries signed on Saturday the Nakhichevan Treaty to establish a cooperation council.

The treaty was signed at the summit meeting of leaders of Turkic-speaking countries held in Azerbaijan's Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, autonomous republic (1990 est. pop. 310,000), 2,124 sq mi (5,501 sq km), an exclave of Azerbaijan, bordered on the south by Iran and Turkey and on the north by Armenia, which separates Nakhichevan from the rest of Azerbaijan. .

, Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyzstan's President Kurmanbek Bakiyev and Turkmenistan's Vice President Hidir Saparliyev attended the summit meeting hosted by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev.

The agreement will also lead to the establishment of several other councils and will create a consultancy mechanism with a Secretariat to be established in Istanbul.

Following the signing ceremony, leaders visited a sanatorium sanatorium /san·a·to·ri·um/ (san?ah-tor´e-um) an institution for treatment of sick persons, especially a private hospital for convalescents or patients with chronic diseases or mental disorders.  and had lunch.
