(DIP) TOPTAN: PEOPLE IN TURKEY HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH SECULARISM.PODGORICA, Jul 9, 2009 (TUR tur: see ibex. ) -- Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said Thursday that Turkey is a secular country which has adopted secularism sec·u·lar·ism n. 1. Religious skepticism or indifference. 2. The view that religious considerations should be excluded from civil affairs or public education. as a life style and the people (in Turkey) have no problems with secularism. Toptan was the guest of Montenegro's private tv channel Atlas TV. Asked if radical Islamists pose a threat, Toptan said that Islam is a religion of love and tolerance and, as other religions, Islam teaches principles like helping those in need, preaching the truth and what is beautiful. It is out of question to think about violence and killing of people along side Islam. It is impossible to understand those who commit crimes by claiming that they are fighters for Islam, Toptan said. Turkey is a secular country and it has adopted secularism as a life style. The people (in Turkey) have no problems with secularism. Nonetheless, there exist debates from time to time about how secularism is being implemented in Turkey. We look at such debates as part of a democratic atmosphere.
