'We'll bring in drug tests at roadside' SAFETY.


ROADSIDE drug testing will be introduced as soon as a reliable system is available, it was claimed yesterday.

Junior Transport Minister Noel Ahern Noel Ahern (Irish: Nollaig Ó hEachthairn; born 28 December, 1944), is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He is a Teachta Dála (TD) for Dublin North West and is currently the Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special  said the Medical Bureau of Road Safety was studying the progress of trials being carried out in Australia and other countries.

Mr Ahern added it made no sense that roadside alcohol testing was mandatory but drug testing was not.

He added: "As soon as there is a reliable roadside test roadside test n. a preliminary test law enforcement officers use on a suspected drunk driver at the spot the driver has been pulled over. Essentially it is a test of equilibrium (balance), reflexes, and mental acuity, consisting of standing on one foot and then the  for drugs we will change the legislation to allow for its introduction"

Raising the issue, Fine Gael Fine Gael (fē`nə gāl), Irish political party. Formed in 1933, it was the successor of the party founded by William Cosgrave that held power from the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922 until ousted by the republican Fianna  TD Michael Ring told the Dail: "There are hundreds of people being killed every year by motorists taking drugs and they're getting away with it."
