The Indian pharmaceutical market is the 15th largest in the world pharmaceutical market by sales, 4th by volume and is currently valued at $4.98 billion. However, it has been largely avoided by the leading pharmaceutical companies due to lack of adequate IP protection, consequently the Indian market has been dominated by cheap generic drugs.

Not only are international multinational companies gearing up to fully enter the Indian market, but large Indian companies are becoming increasingly adept at penetrating the large international with high volume generic drugs. Also, these companies are making high investments into R&D.
