'Tighten laws on firearms to stop crime' TELEVISION.


A LEADING politician has called for gun laws to be tightened so legally-held weapons don't fall into the wrong hands.

 Deasy said loosening licensing laws on handguns would only give criminals more chances to get their hands on weapons.

He added: "The figures went from 305 legally-licensed handguns in the country in 2004 and 2005 to at least 1,700 in 2007 and 2008.

"At a time when our murder rate has jumped so much, particularly in the last 10 years, why are we liberalising the license of handguns?

"It makes absolutely no sense."

THE final episode of Lawless Ireland will be shown on TV3 tonight at 9pm.
