'TANK GIRL' ROLLS AT UNITED ARTISTS

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- United Artists has given "Tank Girl" a go-ahead to begin budgeting for the start of production in mid-April, it was announced today by United Artists Pictures President John Calley. To be directed by Rachel Talalay, the screen version of the hottest comic book heroine in the United Kingdom becomes the first project set to go into production at the recently reactivated studio.
The film will be produced for United Artists by the highly successful producing team of Richard Lewis, Pen Densham and John Watson under their Trilogy Entertainment Group banner. Previously responsible for the blockbusters "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and "Backdraft," the trio most recently produced the action-thriller "Blown Away" for MGM. "Tank Girl" marks the first project that the team will produce for the studio as part of its recently announced production deal.
"`Tank Girl' is cutting-edge entertainment," said Lewis. "It's not about hardware; it's about a woman who is a complete original -- fun, intelligent and while somewhat futuristic, very contemporary."
Director Talalay, who optioned and developed the project, most recently helmed the just-released techno-thriller "Ghost in the Machine" and previously directed the last of the hit "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare." She was previously a successful producer whose credits include "Cry Baby," "Hairspray" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street, Parts 3 & 4."
A hugely popular comic book series in Great Britain, "Tank Girl" is also published around the globe, including in the United States. The title character is the leader of a band of renegades living in post- apocalyptic Australia, some 50 years in the future. Deriving her name from the tank that is her personal mode of transportation, she's tough and hard-edged with an irreverent sense of humor.
In making the announcement, UA Pictures President Calley said, "We are thrilled that Trilogy has now made MGM/UA their home and are very excited to launch our production deal with `Tank Girl.' This character has already found enormous international popularity on the pages of comic books, and we think her entertainment potential on screen is unlimited."
