'ROBO-ATHLETE' READY FOR COMPETITION

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty-six students from Fordson High School unveiled their "robo-athlete" to the Fordson student body today during a pep rally, as the 26 students prepared to leave next week for a national engineering challenge.
The Fordson students have worked with engineers from Ford Motor Company's Alpha Simultaneous Engineering Office for six weeks to design and build a remote-controlled, mobile device -- called "robo-athlete" -- that will compete in a sporting tournament against the models of other high school teams from around the country. Fordson is the only Michigan high school among 26 entries.
The competition is sponsored by U.S. FIRST, a national, non-profit coalition that develops a broad range of programs designed to foster interest among students in science and technology. Often, as in this case, a program calls for hands-on engineering involvement by the students.
The Fordson team and Ford engineers will travel to Nashua, N.H., next week with their "robo-athlete." A panel of nationally renowned individuals will select the winners.
Fordson High School participates in the Ford Academy of Manufacturing Sciences (FAMS) program -- a school-business partnership designed to increase awareness of careers in manufacturing. Several of the Fordson students in the U.S. First challenge are studying a FAMS curriculum.
