He was also a teacher, and his autobiographical one-man show "Save It for the Stage" -- the basis for the film "The Life of Reilly" -- could be considered his final lesson. The man who helped so many artists find their voice via a solo act is showing us all how it's done. Assembled from Reilly's final performance of "Save It for the Stage" in North Hollywood (he died in May), "Life of Reilly" is as charming and disarmingly affecting as the man himself. The "I didn't know that" factor plays heavily where Reilly is concerned. Who would guess that a toupee-wearing, "Hollywood Squares For the musical group of the same name, see . The man's childhood was something of a mess, but he played Christopher Columbus in the fourth-grade play and never looked back. Later, his schoolmates in Uta Hagen's acting class would include people like Jack Lemmon, Geraldine Page, Steve McQueen and Hal Holbrook. "Life of Reilly" co-directors Barry Poltermann and Frank Anderson have dressed up the stage show with periodic quick cuts to old footage of New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of or a trip through the Reilly archives. The extra production values don't detract, but they're not altogether necessary. The filmmakers could just as easily have left the camera on Reilly for the film's 85 minute duration -- or longer! -- and kept us entertained. And longtime friend Burt Reynolds -- "Life of Reilly" has no shortage of name dropping -- supplied Reilly with places both to perform and to teach. Reilly appears to have made excellent use of both venues. The running gag of everyone believing Charles Nelson Reilly to be dead isn't quite so funny anymore. Through this touching little film, Charles Nelson Reilly lives once more.
