, this week announced the renewal of the Department's No-Penalty Retaining Wall Safety Inspection Program. The program allows owners of private retaining walls throughout the five boroughs to request inspections without the issuance of violations.

The inspection program, originally offered in 2005, will be available for a period of 90 days, (commencing July July: see month.  7) and is aimed at providing property owners with an incentive to maintain their private retaining walls.

"The damage to retaining walls from recent storms should serve as a strong reminder to all property owners of the need to properly maintain their retaining walls. Periodic structural assessments and preventative measures are the best way to ensure retaining walls remain safe and stable," said Commissioner Patricia J. Lancaster, FAIA.

"We are encouraging anyone who owns a retaining wall to take advantage of this program immediately."

For those property owners that participate in the program, Buildings Department inspectors will perform a visual examination of their retaining wall to determine if violating conditions exist.

Under the No Penalty program, the Buildings Department will not issue violations for the duration of the program.
