Prosecutor Julian Goose QC told Bradford crown court: "Sanam had been in a great deal of pain and distress over a long period leading up to her death."

The court heard she was unable to walk on her "floppy legs", use her hands properly or breath normally. If she cried, the tot, who was afraid of the dark, was left in a cupboard without a light on at the family's Huddersfield home.

Subhan Anwar and the mother Zahbeena Navsarka, both 21, deny murder. They claim Sanam drowned.
