'MALCOLM' AT TOP OF ITS FORM.Byline: David Kronke TV Critic Frankie Muniz has clearly matured from the lovable moppet mop·pet n. A young child. [From obsolete mop, fool, child, from Middle English moppe. he was a mere two years back, but ``Malcolm in the Middle'' just gets better with age. The show has always managed a precarious balancing act between subtly slipping in genuine coming-of-age issues amid the wildly cartoonish antics, and its third-season episodes accomplish this as artfully as the series can manage. Tonight's episode finds Malcolm's family going on a vacation with his pal Stevie's (Craig Lamar Traylor Craig Lamar Traylor (born March 19, 1989 in San Bernardino County, California) is an American actor. Once they reach their destination, Abe erupts - he'd rather be on a far more upscale excursion than Malcolm's parents, Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), could afford. Meanwhile, Malcolm and Hal discover the tedious reality behind the romance of a father-son fishing outing: Malcolm is reduced to counting the drops of perspiration from his pop's ears. This season, Francis (Christopher Kennedy Masterson) escapes from military school, with dreams of a manly existence in the wilds of Alaska. The ramifications of Francis' emancipation are dealt with in Wednesday's part two: Lois is typically apoplectic ap·o·plec·tic adj. But Wednesday's episode is more noteworthy for the introduction of Chris Eigeman, the amusingly prickly star of Whit Stillman films like ``Barcelona'' and ``The Last Days of Disco,'' as Malcolm's new teacher. He's a former child genius himself who, after losing millions on his dot-com (the classmates' reactions upon learning this factoid are priceless), has become supremely embittered em·bit·ter tr.v. em·bit·tered, em·bit·ter·ing, em·bit·ters 1. It's a cagey commentary on the achievement-above-all-else mentality that private schools inflict upon their students, and the manner in which Malcolm subverts it is great fun to watch. As Muniz and the younger cast members get older, their attentions have naturally turned to girls, and it's mildly worrisome to think how this series, which has never been burdened with the most elegant of taste to begin with, will handle the boys' pubescent pubescent /pu·bes·cent/ (pu-bes´int) 1. arriving at the age of puberty. 2. covered with down or lanugo. pu·bes·cent adj. 1. interests.
