'MAKING THE GRADE' SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE BEGINS WITH $8,000 DONATION

DENVER, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway is donating $8,000 in school supplies to launch this year's "Making the Grade" School Supply Drive aimed at collecting $50,000 worth of school supplies for Denver-area children.
The campaign, which runs July 19 through Sept. 3, is sponsored by NEWS 4 in cooperation with United Airlines, Safeway, Ryder, Mile High United Way and Providers Resource Clearinghouse.
The school supply drive asks Denver-area residents to donate new school supplies, including pencils, pens, crayons, scissors, glue, notebook paper, three-ring binders, pocket folders and rulers. All donations may be dropped in specially-marked bins at any metro area Safeway store or United Airlines ticket office.
Ryder Truck Rental employees will collect the supplies, and United Way and Providers Resource Clearinghouse (PRC) will distribute the materials to nonprofit organizations serving low income youth. PRC is a nonprofit, gifts-in-kind program that provides centralized acquisition, transfer, storage and distribution of donated merchandise.
"Last year, we were able to collect more than $40,000 worth of supplies through the generosity of our customers to help kids who need assistance with back-to-school basics," said Safeway spokesman Jeff Stroh. "We're hoping to do even better this year by generating enough supplies to help more than 10,000 youngsters."
The "Making the Grade" supply drive is conducted as part of KCNC-TV's "Making the Grade" education project sponsored by United Airlines.
