'Long johns' on a cold school trip.


When you've got children the year is punctuated by school-related events that seem to come round with ever-increasing velocity.

This month it is the Christmas Craft Fayre; next month it will be the Carol Service and Christmas parties.

Then there are the activities that just pop up out of nowhere.

Firstborn is about to depart on an AS-level geography field trip to the wild and woolly Isle of Arran Not to be confused with Aran Islands.

The Isle of Arran (Scots Gaelic: Eilean Arainn) is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, with an area of 430 km² (167 square miles). It is in the unitary council area of North Ayrshire.

This Western Isle is, I seem to recall, one of the most fabulous places to be on a sunny day, with an azure blue sky and gentle waves lapping on the exceptionally golden beaches. We had some great holidays there as children.

But in the middle of November I think he's going to find it a mite inhospitable.

It's fortunate then that Firstborn has his treasured base layers to take with him. The base layers have been the subject of much hilarity since we purchased them last year for his school skiing trip.

 wool but to me they resemble long johns and a grandad shirt. To him they symbolise the great outdoors, extreme sports and manliness.
