'Little Sanam's agony ignored by accused'.

Byline: By JOANNE DOUGLAS News Reporter

A COUPLE accused of murdering Sanam Navsarka were described as "cruel" by the prosecutor leading the case.

Zahbeena Navsarka and Subhan Anwar "failed to notice the sheer agony" the two-year-old Deighton girl endured at their hands.

And prosecutor Julian Goose QC said the couple, both aged 21, failed to save the toddler because they were responsible for her injuries.

During his closing speech to the jury, Mr Goose detailed the events from February 2008, when Navsarka and Anwar met, to little Sanam's death on May 8.

He said: "When Zahbeena Navsarka and Subhan Anwar met in that phone shop in Batley you might conclude that Sanam was a normal little girl... she appeared to be healthy.

"But what of Sanam as far as Navsarka and Anwar were concerned?

"She appeared to be out of sight and out of mind while these two defendants got onwith what suited them. Sanamwas not important."

The couple, of Riddings Road, are alleged to have subjected Sanam to 107 external injuries before her death, with fractures to both her arms and legs.

They deny murder. Anwar denies causing or allowing the death of a child.

Navsarka admits to failing to protect her daughter.

Mr Goose added: "Each of them blames the other but both did nothing for her, either separately or together.

"Both allege To state, recite, assert, or charge the existence of particular facts in a Pleading or an indictment; to make an allegation.

"From what they say, they didn't even notice she was in sheer agony.

"We say these defendants knew what condition she was in and did nothing because they were the one's who were doing it to her."

He described the cruelty Sanam endured, including being locked in a cupboard.

"Cruelly, we say, they failed to treat those fractures.

"What could have been in the minds of the perpetrators to cause these 107 injuries to such a small child?

"They lied about Sanam drowning because they had to find a reason as to why she collapsed and died."

Mr Goose described their actions as a "cover up", adding: "The events ofMay 8 shows what was on their minds - themselves and themselves only.

"The evidence here proves you can be sure that they are both guilty of murder."

The case continues.
