'KEEP PENNSYLVANIA BEAUTIFUL DAY' LITTER CRUSADE TO BE HELD SATURDAY
PITTSBURGH, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The 13th annual "Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB) Day" -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) litter crusade -- will be held Saturday, April 25, along highways throughout the commonwealth, it was announced today.
Thousands of individuals and hundreds of groups supplied with PennDOT safety vests and garbage bags will remove unsightly trash from roads and greenways in an effort to both beautify the state and increase awareness of the trash problem -- one that costs PennDOT about $1 million a year in Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties alone.
One of the original environmental movements, KPB is the umbrella under which several PennDOT beautification programs are managed, including Adopt-A-Highway and Operation Wildflower. All function as partnerships between PennDOT and the public.
The two-year-old Adopt-A-Highway program, with more than 100 participating groups in this district and over 2,000 statewide, enables private citizens to become special caretakers of commonwealth roads. Operation Wildflower encourages the state-supervised planting of perennials on litter-free PennDOT right-of-way.
Recognizing that young people hold the key to the future, PennDOT visits elementary schools, educating children about the importance of proper trash disposal and distributing educational coloring books and embroidered jacket patches as part of its program.
While April is KPB month, the department works year-round with interested citizens to "Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful," a spokesman said.
