'Joe deserves honour more than anyone'.

Byline: Samantha Mendez

BOXING hero Joe Calzaghe Joe Calzaghe (born 23 March, 1972 in Hammersmith, London England) is a Welsh boxer of Italian and Welsh descent, who is nicknamed "The Pride of Wales". He currently lives in Cwmbran, Wales, and is one of the pound for pound top 10 boxers in the world according to the Ring Magazine.  is in line to become the first person to receive the Freedom of Caerphilly Caerphilly (kīrfĭl`ē, kär–), Welsh Caerffili, town (1981 pop. 42,376) and county borough, 108 sq mi (279 sq km), S Wales.  County Borough County borough is a term introduced in 1889 in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (excluding Scotland), to refer to a borough or a city independent of county council control. .

Councillors discussed the matter at a recent cabinet meeting, and the issue has now been given final approval at a meeting of the full council.

The award for Freedom of the Caerphilly County Borough is a new honour created to acknowledge people of distinction who have, in the opinion of the council, "rendered eminent services to the borough".

At the meeting it was also proposed the Royal Welsh Regiment The Royal Welsh Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Territorial Army in the United Kingdom. It was formed in 1999 as part of the restructuring of the TA by the amalgamation of the two Welsh TA battalions:
  • 3rd (V) Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers
should be the next recipient of the prestigious award in 2010.

Leader of Caerphilly Council Lindsay Whittle said: "No one deserves to be honoured more than Joe Calzaghe.

Wales' and the UK's greatest boxer and thoroughly deserves to be honoured by the county borough where he lives.

"Admittedly I questioned the reason for considering the Royal Welsh Regiment as I had viewed the Freedom honour as something for individuals.

"I then held a meeting with their representatives and I was impressed with the local credentials presented and the clear Welsh links.

"It became my honour to nominate them, their close connections with this area and the historical links to the former Mon mouth shire Regiment are part of the reasoning.

"I am also aware there are many young men and women serving in many other regiments who are no less deserving but this nomination represents the honour we wish to bestow on all who serve in the armed forces from the county borough."

It is likely, subject to council approval, that Calzaghe, 36, will receive the honour this year and the Royal Welsh Regiment in 2010.

Allan Pritchard, deputy leader of the council, originally nominated Joe for the award in January 2008 and the proposal has gained momentum following Calzaghe's recent decision to announce his retirement.

The star retires as the undefeated world super middleweight champion after winning all 46 of his professional fights. His career spanned almost 20 years, which saw him unbeaten as a professional boxer and a triple ABA champion as an amateur.
