'INDECENT PROPOSAL' GROSSES $18.3 MILLION TO BECOME NO. 1 FILM DURING FIRST WEEKEND IN RELEASE TAKING 35 PERCENT OF OVERALL BOX OFFICE

 HOLLYWOOD, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- "Indecent Proposal," starring Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, grossed $18,387,632 with 1,672 prints during the film's debut weekend (April 9-11) to become the No. 1 film in the United States and Canada with a per- print average of $10,854, it was announced today by Barry London, president of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures. The film's five-day gross is $24,543,997.
 "Indecent Proposal" grossed $6,661,241 on Friday (April 9), $7,365,913 on Saturday (10) and $4,360,478 on Sunday (11). This opening weekend gross represents approximately 35 percent of the overall box office in the North American market. It also is the largest opening of 1993 by a wide margin.
 In New York, in 113 theaters, the film grossed $1,837,535 for a per-print average of $16,261. Contributing to the New York total were the following Manhattan theaters: the 84th Street with $69,466, Meadows Secaucus with $53,776 and the Astor Plaza with $52,978.
 In Los Angeles, in 83 theaters, "Indecent Proposal" grossed $1,311,234, for a per-print average of $15,798. Contributing to the Los Angeles total were the following theaters: Cineplex Odeon Universal City with $80,781, the Newport Cinema with $42,112, the Mann Bruin in Westwood with $38,410 and the AMC Century City with $37,940.
 Chicago, in 40 theaters, grossed $753,200 for a per-print average of $18,825. Contributing to the Chicago total were the River Oaks with $58,376 and Ford City with $49,262. In Miami, with 40 runs, the film grossed $560,500 for a per-print average of $14,000. This total includes Kendall Town & Country with $32,821 and Coco Walk with $31,306.
 In San Francisco, with 35 runs, the film grossed $531,000 for a per-print average of $15,171. This total includes the Century San Jose with $52,379 and the Century Plaza in South San Francisco with $43,007.
 Other top-grossing theaters across the United States and Canada include the Loews Montreal, which grossed $54,160, the UA Plaza in Dallas, which grossed $40,095, Sam's Place in Philadelphia with $38,609, and the Eglinton Theatre in Toronto, which grossed $34,871.
 In "Indecent Proposal," an idyllic marriage is challenged by wealthy financier John Gage, who offers David and Diana Murphy a million dollars if Diana will agree to spend one night with him. Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson star in a romantic drama that reunites director Adrian Lyne and producer Sherry Lansing for the first time since "Fatal Attraction."
 The screenplay by Amy Holden Jones was based upon the novel by Jack Engelhard. Co-produced by Michael Tadross and executive produced by Tom Schulman and Alex Gartner, "Indecent Proposal" is the initial project of Sherry Lansing Productions and was filmed prior to Lansing being named chairman of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures. The supporting cast includes Oliver Platt and Seymour Cassel.
 MPAA-rated R, "Indecent Proposal" is presented in Dolby Stereo in selected theaters. The soundtrack album is available on MCA Compact Discs and Cassettes.
