MacLeod, who died aged 72 in 2004, took the national side to the 1978 World Cup on a wave of enthusiasm but they failed at the group stage. Brown said: "I love Ally. He was a major personality. But if the criteria is success, we should honour Alex McLeish." His comments were backed by Mirror columnist Alan Rough, who played under MacLeod as goalkeeper. He said: "Ally lifted the nation and got everybody interested in the national team again. But he hasn't achieved the winning status of the Shanklys and Steins."
