, 67, attacked a Tartan Army The Tartan Army are travelling supporters of the Scottish national football team. They were named the World's Friendliest Fans during the 1998 World Cup, and have won numerous awards over the years from both FIFA and UEFA for their combination of rabid support and friendly  campaign to have MacLeod inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame - and claimed the move would "reward failure".

MacLeod, who died aged 72 in 2004, took the national side to the 1978 World Cup on a wave of enthusiasm but they failed at the group stage.

Brown said: "I love Ally. He was a major personality. But if the criteria is success, we should honour Alex McLeish."

His comments were backed by Mirror columnist Alan Rough, who played under MacLeod as goalkeeper.

He said: "Ally lifted the nation and got everybody interested in the national team again. But he hasn't achieved the winning status of the Shanklys and Steins."

The pro-MacLeod petition was launched by the Tartan Army's Ayr branch. If enough people sign, he will be put on a shortlist in September.
