'Hey, if you come down to the area we have a special offer on houses'.

Byline: Sebastian Heller

RESIDENTS living close to the Astrasol shoe factory in Latsia said yesterday that in a nearby street there was not one house that has not had a cancer sufferer.

At a meeting yesterday with Health Minister Christos Patsalides residents submitted their claims to get the factory moved and to request that a full study on the toxicology and carcinogenicity carcinogenicity /car·ci·no·ge·nic·i·ty/ (kahr?si-no-je-nis´i-te) the ability or tendency to produce cancer.

Giorgos Karapatakis, the lawyer representing the residents said yesterday that on Marathovouno Street, close to the factory, "there is not one house that does not have a cancer sufferer, or someone who has died from cancer".

The residents have presented doctors' certificates for a total of 52 people from the area all diagnosed with cancer to the government. The factory was closed down in May 2009 pending investigation and they want to make sure it was not reopened in its present location nor near it.

Giorgos Perdikis, spokesman for the Green Party, said that at the meeting Patsalides promised to accelerate the study being undertaken. "The Minister said he will talk with the other Ministers to begin the process to move the factory." he said, noting also that Pataslides promised to write to the other Ministers to ask for their support in this.

"You're asking me if I know anyone with cancer?" said Christos Minas, a resident of the area who added with a grim smile: "I have cancer, my wife has cancer, my sister-in-law has a tumour. Hey, if you come down to the area we have a special offer on houses."

The residents are planning to go to the Presidential Palace on Sunday to ask for the support of President Christofias in their bid to get the factory moved.
