'He chased a workman along the main road shouting he was going to take the throat out of him..' - WITNESS IN CALEDON YESTERDAY; KNIFE HORROR IN THE VILLAGE.

Byline: By MAURICE FITZMAURICE

A MAN stabbed four people yesterday after going on the rampage following an all-night party.

He began the bloody spree at a Mace shop in Caledon, Co Tyrone, at around 10.40am.

Locals said a man in his early 20s plunged a 10-inch knife into his first victim's lower chest leaving him with massive internal injuries.

He then set off down the village's main street where he stabbed three workmen in a nearby shop.

Local woman Letitia Millar said she saw the knifeman chasing a workman along the main road shouting that he was going to "take the throat out of him".

She added: "The police arrived and when the first police officer tackled him he had a go at him with the knife before the two policemen got him to the ground."

His first victim, believed to be in his early 20s, was described last night as being in a "very serious" condition at Craigavon Area Hospital.

The Daily Mirror understands two of the other victims were also stabbed in the chest and abdomen area.

One was knifed once and another suffered multiple injuries.

Local GP Jim McMullan, who treated three of the victims, told the Mirror the first man was drenched in Adj. 1. drenched in - abundantly covered or supplied with; often used in combination; "drenched in moonlight"; "moon-drenched meadows"

He said: "We were called and told there had been a man stabbed in Caledon so I rushed up there with my fourth-year medical student Clare Thompson.

"When we got there we found the first fella lying in a huge pool of blood.

"The victim was able to tell me his mate had been knifed too.

"The knife the fella had was very big. I was working on the victim for 10 to 15 minutes applying pressure bandages and giving him fluids and oxygen.

"It's only that he was a big fella that he didn't die on the spot.

"It's only when I looked up for a second and realised the door was locked that I saw the boy across the street wandering about with a knife in his hand gone past him on the way to the Mace without even realising.

"But then someone appeared at the door and said, 'Come quick, someone else has been stabbed'.

"The police and an ambulance arrived then and we ran off to help the next guy who'd been stabbed once.

"Then someone shouted there's a third victim. I realised I was out of my depth and rang the surgery for more help.

"The third victim had been stabbed once in the chest area as well as a few more times.

"Another doctor and a nurse from the surgery arrived then as well as two more ambulances. My shirt was drenched with blood. In the end there were two doctors, two nurses and two medical students treating all these people. It was like something out of a film."

Other sources said a suspect was arrested outside Roy Alan's furniture shop just minutes after the rampage began.

A source added: "He was standing 20 or 30 yards away from the Mace with the knife in his hand wearing a trendy white shirt and a pair of jeans.

"He wasn't waving the arms about or shouting or anything, just standing there."

Local sources said the man's mother tried to reason with him but "he was having none of it".

Caledon, a tiny village with a population of around 400, was sealed off as police launched a major inquiry.

Local councillor Jim Hamilton James Hamilton (born February 9, 1976) is an experienced Scottish football striker, having played for eight senior clubs in his career. He currently plays for Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Premier League.  said the village is in "a state of shock".

The UUP Uup, symbol for the element ununpentium.  mayor of Dungannon added: "It's just an incredible thing to happen.

"People are numb.

"I just hope that the four people injured make a full recovery. Their families must be in a terrible state."

Seamus O'Reilly, a lead consultant at Craigavon Hospital, said three of the men were able to tell him they had been working at a local shop when the man came in wielding a knife.

He added that they were conscious and in "good spirits".

However, he said the fourth man was unconscious and seriously ill.
