Business Correspondent STRONG interest is believed to have been shown by one or more consortia in building a new nuclear power station on land alongside the existing plant at Wylfa on Anglesey. Politicians on the island and at Westminster told the Daily Post yesterday that they were confident the site stood a very good chance of being chosen for a newnuclear station that could cost pounds 3bn to build and create 1,600 construction jobs over a seven to eight year period. Its purpose is to deliver savings in the decommissioning and clean-up of the UK’s civil nuclear legacy in to test market interest on land atWylfa was due to end last night. TheNDAsaid that for reasons of commercial confidentiality it was not yet able to divulge details of interested parties at this stage. It is up to private companies to say what sites they are interested in and for the government to decide what licences to issue. "They would be the lead partner in a consortium interested in a package for Wylfa that would include power generation, decommissioning of the existing Magnox reactor and disposal of waste as well as the new nuclear build project," said Mr Owen. "Other companies have been in touch with the county council and other bodies to make known their interest. I don't want to speculate too much, but it is making steady progress. "The Wales Office reaffirmed at the meeting that it was supportive of a new build." Anglesey County Council leader Gareth Winston Roberts said: "The council has met with two or three companies over the last six months and I am confident that some of those companies will have expressed to the NDA an interest in the Wylfa site. "The discussions we have been having with these companies - who have asked to remain anonymous for now - are very positive and bode well for the future of Anglesey. It would be immensely important for the north west Wales economy." Coun Roberts said in terms of site selection for new reactors, Wylfa has come from very low in the pecking order to one of the front-runners, largely because the county council had supported a new build at Wylfa early on.
