At just 13, he touched a lot of hearts with his wit and adventurous spirit, which put him on skateboards and snowboards and in the seat of an off-road motorcycle.

He was always careful riding in the hills north of town, a hobby he had begun about nine months ago. That's why his death last week came as such a shock to the hundreds of family members and friends who turned out for his funeral.

"It's ironic," said his mother, Katherine Hillman Hillman was a famous British automobile marque, manufactured by the Rootes Group. It was based in Ryton-on-Dunsmore, near Coventry, England, from 1907 to 1976. Before 1907 the company had built bicycles. . "This is totally freaky freak·y

Those who loved him packed Crossroads Christian Fellowship church Christian Fellowship Church(CFC) is a non-denominational mega-church located in Evansville, Indiana. David Niednagel, the current senior pastor, founded the church in 1974. As of August 2007 the church has an average weekly attendance of 2,800 adults.  Wednesday for a viewing and memorial service.

"I had always worried about Jake. I always worried if he had enough friends," his mother said. "One thing I found out this week was how many people did know him and how many people liked him."

In one of the service's more touching moments, Jake's girlfriend, Lauren Majorski, 14, read a poem she wrote.

"Forever and always you will be my first love," she said.

Before beginning the service, the Rev. John Kruer of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church asked everyone in the packed room to turn off their cell phones.

But one kept going off.

Jake's father, James Lucas, explained it was Jake's. It had been placed with him in his coffin.

"That cell phone was one of his passions," the father said.

At the viewing, many of Jake's friends from Valley View Middle School placed notes in the open coffin, along with a menu from a favorite restaurant.

"He was my baby," said his father, holding Jake's favorite teddy bear to his chest and saying he'll carry it with him everywhere. "I was always afraid he would get hurt, but not on a motorcycle."

Kruer said the service represented a kind of "group hug" and encouraged everyone to tell stories about how they remembered Jake.

"Jake loved life. He loved the outdoors," his mother said, listing among his interests skating, skateboarding, snowboarding and bicycle and motorcycle riding.

She was trying to hold back tears because Jake didn't like to see her cry.
