What: This graphic documentary chronicles the history of elephants
in captivity. 'Elephants and Man' explores the historical
interaction of human culture with these gentle giants and
provides an unforgiving examination of the pervasive
suffering of elephants at the hands of man. It not only
entertains and educates, but proposes a practical solution to
the problem of elephants in captivity.
Who: In addition to spearheading elephant education, VFTA launched
the Working Cats Program, which employs feral cats to patrol
the Flower and Produce Marts in downtown L.A.; classes in
humane education at local schools; and programs to enable
seniors and others to care for their beloved pets despite
financial challenges. VFTA has been a leader in the fight to
bring Ruby the Elephant back to the L.A. Zoo, as well as her
beloved animal companion, Gita. The film coincides with the
heated debate about closing the elephant exhibit at the zoo.
Following the film there will be a panel discussion
including:
-- Filmmaker Jacek Kropinski
-- Executive Producer Melya Kaplan
-- Ex-Curator of the L.A. Zoo Les Schobert
-- L.A. Alliance for Elephants' Catherine Doyle
