'ELECTRONIC INFORMATION NEWS' SYSTEM DEBUTS IN FLORIDA
UTF AND BRITE VOICE FORM STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
WICHITA, Kan., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- In a unique new relationship signaling the entry of telephone operating companies into the provision of "Advertiser Supported Audiotex" (ASA), Brite Voice Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: BVSI) of Wichita and United Telephone Co. of Florida (UTF) have teamed up to provide the Fort Myers, Fla. market with an "electronic audiotex" information and enhanced voice services system. Since May 15, 1992, callers accessing an existing time and temperature number are invited to browse through a wide variety of information categories, such as local, national, and international news, up-to-date stock quotes, and sports updates. United Telephones' new system is called United TeleFacts.
CATAPULTING AN OLD TECHNOLOGY INTO THE INFORMATION AGE
United Telephone of Florida offers TeleFacts on their existing time and temperature number, which has been serving Fort Myers for 20 years. Hundreds of thousands of callers per year access this service, which is free to the caller and sponsored by a local merchant, such as a bank.
UTF uses this existing number as an audiotex gateway to offer additional information services. When an individual calls the time and temperature number a voice prompt invites the caller to self- navigate through several hundred categories of information using a touchtone phone. Topics such as news, sports, and stock quotes are updated frequently and transmitted via satellite directly to Florida. The service is free to callers and is advertiser sponsored.
"What is really exciting about TeleFacts is that it is an important part of the future of information services. It is a fantastic example of taking old technology -- the time and temperature number -- and exploding it into the information age," explained Brian Craven, United Telephone of Florida's public information administrator.
United Telephone decided to expand the level of service to its customers by supplying them with an entire world of information delivered by the most modern technology in the most convenient way. TeleFacts will help position UTF as an information resource as well as a telephone services provider, buttressing United Telephone's image of quality and excellence.
Harriet Cartwright, United Telephone of Florida product manager - advanced exchange services stated, "UTF has been an audiotex service provider for several years. Customers rely on the phone company for information, and with this technology from Brite, they will look to us to be leaders in this business. Today's modern consumer is very sophisticated. He or she wants to work, play, learn and be entertained in the most efficient manner possible. Advertiser Supported Audiotex is a great way to deliver fresh, up-to-date facts to information starved consumers."
Byron Culbertson, Brite Voice's director of marketing, national accounts, has worked extensively with United Telephone and its parent company, Sprint Corp. "Culbertson agrees, "People will certainly begin to look to UTF as a provider of more than just dial tone and traditional telephone services."
THE BRITE - UTF PARTNERSHIP
Both Brite Voice and UTF were in unique positions to deliver a top-flight audio information system to the Fort Myers market. By leveraging its existing position as a provider of time and temperature, UTF wanted to offer community based resources in the form of enhanced voice services to their customer base in Florida. Brite Voice's position as a leader in both the manufacturing of audiotex systems and the production of audio programs reinforced UTF's goal to offer a superior product to the market.
Culbertson comments, "It is a perfect fit. Brite will use United Telephone's expertise, knowledge and experience in telecommunications and telephone services in Florida. In turn, UTF will capitalize on Brite's history of being an audiotex industry leader and the largest information provider in the country. We are extremely proud to be associated with United Telephone of Florida and its parent company, Sprint Corporation. We have a long standing history with Sprint. Sprint TeleMedia has been our largest customer over the past three years, and we have seven voice directory systems with Sprint Publishing and Advertising. We are embracing this opportunity to do business with United Telephone operating companies. UTF, United Telephone's flagship operation, is just the first venture."
BRITE, UTF PARTNERING KEY TO TELEFACTS SUCCESS
Brite has gained an industry wide reputation for working closely with its clients to ensure successful programs.
Cartwright comments, "Brite was committed from the beginning to work closely with us to perfect a system to suit our needs. Their professional spirit and commitment to excellence mirrored that of United. Brite had the platform, audiotex programs, and advertising sales experience to make this partnership hit the ground running."
