Maynooth lecturer Joe Larragy, a key supporter of the group, said cliches are being thrown around which suggest the financial crisis is being deepened by the money spent on older people. He added: "There is an extensive problem of ageism and ageist attitudes in Irish society which has become even worse due to the current economic downturn. "It is encapsulated in cliched references to 'old age crisis', 'pensions time-bomb', 'bed blockers' and the 'burden of the elderly'." The Older and Bolder group issued the warning as it published a submission to Aine Brady, the minister for older people. Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness, president of the Law Reform Commission, chaired the launch.
