'Bible History' course should be dropped, AU tells Fla. school.

A south Florida school district has voted to adopt a "Bible-as-History" course despite warnings from Americans United that the class is a cover for fundamentalist Christian indoctrination in·doc·tri·nate

that could lead to a lawsuit.

The Lee County School Board voted 3-2 Aug. 6 to go ahead with the course during an emotional board meeting attended by more than 200 local residents. The vote came after months of debate over the issue.

The five-member board is dominated by three Christian Coalition Christian Coalition, organization founded to advance the agenda of political and social conservatives, mostly comprised of evangelical Protestant Republicans, and to preserve what it deems traditional American values.  allies. Earlier this year, they conceived the Bible course as a way of getting moral instruction into the schools. One member, Lanny Moore Sr., a local lumber dealer, says public schools were fine until the Supreme Court ruled against mandatory school prayer in 1962 and '63. "My chart shows everything went south in 1963," he said.

Although the board majority has insisted that the course will he objective and historical, critics disagree. They point to comments Moore made after adoption of the curriculum as evidence that the class will be used to indoctrinate in·doc·tri·nate

who our creator is," Moore said. "Why go through the formality of swearing before God when our kids don't know who a God is. I agree religion ought to be taught in our home, but I believe the Christian Bible is the Bible. The Bible is history, and it has a role in the formation of our country...."

Eva Freeman, a local parent who opposes the curriculum, said Moore's remarks indicate that the curriculum is not suitable for public schools. "There is no doubt in my mind that this course holds a religious rather than a secular meaning for [Moore]," she told the Fort Myers Fort Myers, city (1990 pop. 45,206), seat of Lee co., SW Fla., on the Caloosahatchee River, near the Gulf of Mexico; founded 1850, inc. 1905. Although the board had hoped to start the classes when school returned to session at the end of summer, principals at two high schools have announced they would not force teachers to offer the class without first training them. The delay means that the Bible course will probably not begin until the second term starts in December.

Americans United has urged the board to drop the curriculum altogether. In a July I I letter to Dr. Douglas Santini, board chairman, AU Executive Director Barry W. Lynn Reverend Barry W. Lynn (born 1948 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) has been the Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State since 1992.[1]  wrote, "U.S. public schools may teach about religion, but may riot indoctrinate or favor one religious perspective over others. Teaching public school students that the bible is an accurate representation of world history is not within the law.... Frankly, it appears that these classes could become little more than an opportunity to teach a specific religious doctrine as scholarly fact."

In an effort to reduce some of the criticism, the board voted to remove references to creationism creationism or creation science, belief in the biblical account of the creation of the world as described in Genesis, a characteristic especially of fundamentalist Protestantism (see fundamentalism).  in the curriculum and delete instruction about Adam About Adam is a 2000 British film, a romantic comedy about the relation between Adam (Stuart Townsend) and Lucy (Kate Hudson). The board's Christian Coalition majority is dividing the community. District Superintendent District Superintendent may be:

Bobbie D'Alessandro resigned after the board insisted on pressing forward with the Bible class, as did board attorney Steven Butler. Butler remarked that the Bible curriculum "plainly contravenes the Constitution."

Angry parents have formed a local group to put forth a slate of candidates in the 1998 elections. Working through a local political action committee, they hope to replace the Christian Coalition activists with a more moderate board.

* The Clover, S.C., School District has decided to terminate elementary and middle school Bible classes sponsored by a local ministerial association, following a complaint from an Americans United member in the area.

The classes were offered by volunteer teachers recruited by a coalition of local Protestant churches. They took place during the school day on school property. Children who chose not to attend were sent to a study hall.

In a July 1 letter to superintendent Billy K. Floyd, AU member Marc R. Smilow questioned the constitutionality of the instruction. On July 25, Floyd informed Smilow that the classes were being discontinued.
