 'EXTREME CLOSE-UP,' TO AIR MAY 11-15, 8:30 P.M. (ET/PT)
Annie Leibovitz, Wynton Marsalis, Among Those to be Spotlighted
With In-Depth Interviews During Week-Long Tribute
LOS ANGELES, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- E! Entertainment Television turns its focus to the fine arts when the network's "Extreme Close-Up" devotes a special theme week to "Artists on E!", it was announced today by Fran Shea, senior vice president of programming for the network. Set to air May 11-15 at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT), "Artists on E!" will spotlight an impressive line-up of performers from the worlds of ballet, opera, theater and the visual arts.
"Extreme Close-Up," E!'s nightly series which features in-depth interviews with today's biggest stars, will showcase a different artist each evening:
Monday, May 11 -- Annie Leibovitz
Portrait photographer Leibovitz is well-known for her bold dramatizations of contemporary personalities, and has captured on film notables from Mick Jagger to Whoopi Goldberg. Leibovitz is Rolling Stone's chief photographer and "Annie Leibovitz Photographs 1970-1990," an exhibition of 120 works, will visit more than a dozen cities in the United States and Europe through 1995.
Tuesday, May 12 -- Spaulding Gray
Actor, performance artist, monologist and novelist, Gray is one of the finest practitioners of storytelling today. After appearing in "The Killing Fields," Gray wrote the theatrical monologue, "Swimming to Cambodia," which later also became a film. His latest monologue, "Monster in a Box," which played to packed houses in Los Angeles and San Francisco, is being published in time for the release of the feature film by the same name.
Wednesday, May 13 -- Wynton Marsalis
Versatile trumpeter Marsalis has many projects in the works: a new album, "Blue Interlude" is due May 1; his much-heralded Lincoln Center debut May 27; and the current Broadway revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire" starring Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange also features his music.
Thursday, May 14 -- Cynthia Gregory
Rudolph Nureyev once called Gregory "America's prima ballerina absoluta." Since her appearance in American Ballet Theatre's "Swan Lake" in 1967, she has reigned as one of dance's best. Television viewers saw her recently on the Academy Awards telecast, dancing to one of the nominated songs from "Beauty and the Beast."
Friday, May 15 -- Jose Carreras
Since his childhood in Barcelona, Spain, where his interest in opera was kindled by Mario Lanza films, Carreras has enjoyed a rapid rise to become one of the top lyric tenors in the world. His autobiography is currently selling in the United States and Europe and his historic, Grammy-winning "triple tenor" recording with colleagues Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo topped the classical charts for more than a year.
"Fans of 'Extreme Close-Up' are in for a rare treat during 'Artists on E!' week," commented Shea. "Each night will be an intimate and revealing interview with a different intriguing personality from the world of the arts. E! is pleased to be able to showcase such artists as part of our broad coverage of the entertainment industry."
