'ARMED RAIDER' IS CAUGHT AFTER HE SMASHES INTO IRISHMEN'S CAR AT 160KPH; Miracle escape for family in US.Byline: BY CONOR CULLEN A SUSPECTED bank robber in the US was nabbed when his jeep smashed 160kph into a car carrying three Irishmen. Billy Roche, his son Niall and son-in-law Patrick Peare, from Rosslare, Co Wexford, had a miracle escape when they were hit by Daniel Freeland as he fled from cops. Freeland's jeep did a triple somersault following the smash but he still managed to put up a struggle for arresting officers. The 62-year-old had given police the slip for 40km during which state troopers fired two shots at him when he was forced to stop at a railroad crossing. Businessman Mr Roche said last night he was lucky to be alive and glad to be back home. He added: "We were just going across the junction and out of nowhere this guy came and smashed into our car. "He hit me in front of my knee and took the whole front off the car. If he had hit us another few feet back he would have wiped us out. "He was travelling about 160kph. It was only at the very last second that I saw him. "Just after the accident we were sitting in the middle of the road and then, all of a sudden, there was up to 50 squad cars, a helicopter and the whole lot around us. "I was in a bit of a daze and I turned to Pat and said they're on the ball here." It was a few minutes before the three realised they had unwittingly halted a bank robber. Luckily, none of the men suffered any serious injuries.
