'ANYPLACE BUT HUDSON'S' CAMPAIGN SET FOR THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
DETROIT, Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the UAW:
Following several weeks of informational activity, a broad coalition is set to encourage holiday shoppers to go "Anyplace But Hudson's" this Thanksgiving weekend.
Commenting on the campaign, UAW President Owen Bieber said, "Our goal is to remind Dayton Hudson that by continuing behavior which is offensive to their customers, they can only experience lower sales or lower profits or both." The UAW was selected to represent employees at Hudson's Westland store in May of 1990.
"Our hope is that Hudson's will finally get the message that they have much to gain by obeying the law and treating the community and their employees with respect," Bieber added.
Beginning with the distribution of balloons for children and coffee for adults at the annual Thanksgiving parade, the "Anyplace But Hudson's" campaign will continue with informational picketing outside entrances to Hudson's stores in southeast Michigan, Flint, Saginaw and Toledo on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The action is supported by civil rights and community groups including the NAACP and by the Michigan and Metro Detroit AFL-CIO.
The campaign grows out of concerns over the role of the Minneapolis- based Dayton Hudson Corporation (NYSE: DH) in the community and in the treatment of its employees since taking full control of the previously family-owned Hudson's department store chain in the early 1980s.
The closing of the store downtown and the withdrawal of major corporate sponsorship of the Thanksgiving Day parade shortly after the Dayton Hudson takeover disturbed many Detroit-area residents and community leaders.
More recently, after months of efforts by employees acting as individuals and in ad hoc committees to win the attention of management over issues of employee relations and pay and benefit takeaways, employees at Hudson's Westland store voted 274-179 in favor of recognition by the UAW on May 11, 1990.
Despite direct NLRB orders to bargain, however, Dayton Hudson has refused to discuss employee concerns. The NLRB has formally asked the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals to enforce its bargaining order. Hudson's has also undertaken an chain-wide campaign of harassment and intimidation against union supporters which has resulted in several NLRB complaints against Dayton Hudson.
