'AMERICAN BUSINESS PHONE BOOK' CD-ROM TO BE MARKETED
 UNDER NEW SONY 'AFFILIATED LABEL'
OMAHA, Neb., June 2 /PRNewswire/ --- American Business Information, Inc. nationwide supplier of business information database products and services, has announced that Sony Electronic Publishing Co. will distribute American Business Information's American Business Phone Book as part of Sony Electronic Publishing's new "Affiliated Label" CD-ROM program. A wide range of entertainment, education, and reference CD-ROM titles from many leading U.S. software publishers will be manufactured, marketed and distributed under the Affiliated Label program.
The American Business Phone Book is itself a recent addition to American Business Information's growing optical products line. It is a complete "directory" of every business in the United States and Canada, with over 10 million listings from more than 5,000 Yellow Pages directories. The first-of-its-kind CD-ROM can save time and money spent on directory assistance, while improving productivity by allowing users to easily locate more businesses. Used with any IBM PC or compatible equipped with CD-ROM drive, the lightening quick directory can search by company name or by phone number, and through the entire list, or by state, city, zip code or area code.
Sony Electronic Publishing has Affiliated Label marketing agreements with a number of other well-known American software publishers, as well. The American Business Phone Book and 19 other initial title offerings will be aggressively distributed through software specialty stores, consumer electronics stores, record stores, bookstores and mass merchandisers. Affiliated Label titles will be carried by more than 4,700 retail outlets beginning June 1992, with plans to expand this retail network throughout the coming year. Additional CD-ROM titles will be added on an on-going basis, as well. Each 9 inch by 7-1/4 inch by 1-1/4 inch package will sell for around $100.
"We believe this arrangement is an excellent way to reach more consumers and small businesses, which have always been our main focus," explained Bill Chasse, vice president of Electronic Products at American Business Information. "Based on 20 years in this business, we know that a product like the American Business Phone Book is viable. Moreover, the market is primed for the Affiliated Label program. Current trends indicate there will be 3 million CD-ROM drives in the marketplace by the end of 1992, and Affiliated Label titles such as the American Business Phone Book already have tremendous appeal to both businesses and consumers."
"This program signals our belief that the CD-ROM market is poised for tremendous growth," said Olaf Olafsson, president of Sony Electronic Publishing. "Backed by the licensing, marketing and distribution resources of Sony, CD-ROM publishers can feel confident of a consumer market for their products, and retailers can feel confident of a steady supply of high-quality titles. Under our retail agreements, Affiliated Label titles will benefit from exposure to the widest possible consumer audience, and computer and educational retailers will benefit from a new type of customer that Affiliated Label titles will attract."
Sony Electronic Publishing, headquartered in New York, creates, produces and distributes interactive and multimedia software products for the business, entertainment and educational markets. The company is a subsidiary of Sony Software Corporation, a division of Sony USA Inc.
