Celebrating the 85th anniversary of the modern household refrigerator, Frigidaire is launching a search for its oldest operating refrigerator in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  and Canada, called the "Oldest Frigidaire Refrigerator Hunt."

It was back in 1915 when inventor Alfred Mellowes invented the first self-contained electric refrigerator for the home in Fort Wayne Fort Wayne, city (1990 pop. 173,072), seat of Allen co., NE Ind., where the St. Joseph and St. Marys rivers join to form the Maumee River; inc. 1840. It is the second largest city in the state, a major railroad and shipping point, a wholesale and distribution hub, , Ind. He called it the Guardian Frigerator, which became the predecessor to the world-famous Frigidaire refrigerator brand. Production of the Guardian began in 1916. Frigidaire was created in 1918 when W.C. "The Oldest Frigidaire Refrigerator Hunt" is an exciting event that commemorates the contributions and leadership of Frigidaire refrigerators over the year," said Jay Penney, Frigidaire's vice president of sales and marketing. "It also marks the coming introduction of a new generation of high performance, energy-efficient refrigerators that will reduce energy usage by more than 30 percent."

To honor the 85th anniversary, Frigidaire will award the owner of the oldest operating Frigidaire refrigerator in the U.S. and Canada a complete kitchen of new Frigidaire appliances. The prize includes the winner's choice of any of its new 2001 "Next Generation" refrigerators plus an electric or gas range or cook top/wall oven, a dishwasher and a microwave oven.

Ten additional winners, who have the two oldest operating Frigidaire refrigerators in each of Frigidaire's 4 sales regions and in Canada, will receive a new "Next Generation" Frigidaire refrigerator.

Contestants may obtain entry forms from participating Frigidaire appliance retailers. They are also available from 1/800-Frigidaire, or by fax at 440/572-0815.
