A free "Healthy Spirit, Healthy Minds, Healthy Body" event for people of all ages, featuring health and social-service information and organizations, will be held at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, 6190 Third Street (at Paul Avenue) in San Francisco, on Saturday, July 13, 2002, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (This "Health Sunday" event is being held on a Saturday.)

The California Transplant Donor Network Located in Oakland, California, the California Transplant Donor Network (CTDN) is a non-profit, federally designated organ procurement organization that under the adminitration of UNOS facilitates organ recovery and transplantation in the Northern California and Northern Nevada region.  created the "Health Sunday" program to help improve the overall health and wellness of Bay Area residents. A faith-based initiative that assembles a wide variety of health and social-service programs, communities can access information and services in a convenient manner, often following regular worship services. By developing partnerships with organizations concerned with the health and welfare of area communities, the Transplant Network acts as a community health liaison -- providing residents with an array of needed resources in a single location.

Now in its third year, "Health Sundays" have touched more than 1,300 people. Because of the severe health disparities within the East Bay's African-American community, this program has thus far focused on Oakland-based churches. As one of San Francisco's foremost churches serving the African-American community, Cornerstone is leading the effort to expand this program to other diverse communities.

Some of the vital information and services coming to San Francisco's Bayview-Hunters Point community this Saturday include: blood-pressure screenings, with diabetes screenings also being provided by the American Diabetes Association The American Diabetes Association, or the ADA, is an American health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. A kidney-transplant recipient, Jackson currently is running for San Francisco County Supervisor in District 6. Jackson's support of a healthier Bay Area has included his tenure as the first African-American president of the San Francisco Public Health Commission, past-presidency of the San Francisco Commission on Aging and Adult Services and co-chairmanship of the San Francisco Works Welfare to Work program.

More than 80,000 people in the United States are waiting for a vital organ transplant, 7,000 of which are in Northern and Central California.
