, has hired bankers to consider a bid for UK-listed rival Xstrata possibly worth more than [pounds sterling]38 billion ($77bn), UK newspapers said yesterday.

Consolidation is sweeping the global mining industry, and Xstrata's shares jumped on speculation it could be a target.

The Times newspaper, citing a source close to the process, said Vale's interest was at an early stage and no decision had been made about approaching the Xstrata board with a bid.

The Financial Times said Vale had hired Lehman Brothers Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (NYSE: LEH), founded in 1850, is a diversified, global financial services firm. It is a participant in investment banking, equity and fixed income sales, research and trading, investment management, private equity, and private banking.  to look at a move.
