$5.8 Billion Nanotechnology and Food Market to Receive Welcoming Address from Director of Georgia Tech Research Institute.


ATLANTA -- Dr. Steve Cross, Director of the Georgia Tech Research Institute The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is the nonprofit applied research arm of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. GTRI employs around 1,300 people, and is involved in approximately $100 million in research annually for more than 200 clients in industry , will be delivering the Welcoming Address to the Second Annual Nano4Food Conference (www.nanofood.info) to be held at the GTRI GTRI Georgia Tech Research Institute
GTRI Global Threat Reduction Initiative
 Conference Center in Atlanta, GA, October 12th-13th.

Dr. Cross will be welcoming speakers and delegates from over 10 countries who will be assembling in Atlanta to discuss the latest advances in employing nanotechnologies in the food industry and how to further their commercialization.

 Cientifica (www.cientifica), the value of nanotechnologies applied to the food industry has already reached $410 million in 2006 with applications primarily restricted to food packaging for improved gas barrier protection and improved nutraceutical delivery systems.

With the report estimating that the value of these and other applications will reach $5.8 billion by 2012, the assembled participants at the Nano4Food conference, including food industry producers and suppliers, will examine when these applications will become commercially available and if they will be cost effective for their products.

Among the speakers from the food industry will be Vijay K Arora, PhD of Kraft Foods Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE: KFT) is the largest food and beverage company headquartered in North America and the second largest in the world after NestlĂ© SA.

The Philip Morris Company (now known as Altria Group), a company that produces tobacco products, acquired Kraft for
 R&D Center and C. Ann Hollingsworth, PhD, President and Principal of Better Built Foods.

The conference will also address concerns that have been raised about the application of nanotechnologies to food products in a special session of the event.

The conference is being produced in cooperation with the Food Processing Technology Division at Georgia Tech Research Institute, Economic Department Consulate General of the Netherlands, Wageningen Bionanotechnology Centre for Food and Health Innovations, the Institute of Food Technologists, the US Department of Agriculture CSREES CSREES Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (USDA) , and Cientifica.
