Wednesday, hospital officials said $5 million had already been secured from sources including hospital employees, hospital foundation members and corporations with a stake in the region.

``We are very pleased that as we begin the public phase of the campaign, we have already secured more than one-third of our goal from members of the hospital 'family' and several generous lead-gift donors,'' said Gary Cusumano, chief executive of The Newhall Land and Farming Company The Newhall Land and Farming Company is a land management company based in Valencia, California, United States. The $5 million that has already been raised comes from several sources, including two $1 million gifts.

Tom Veloz, a longtime Newhall Memorial supporter, donated one of the seven-figure checks and the other $1 million donor wished to remain anonymous.

``Emergency departments are the heart of the hospital,'' Veloz said.
